Halloween is a Holiday associated with children and adults alike dressing up and going to parties, parades or trick and treat, pumpkin carving and having fun, nowadays the list of different costumes available is almost endless but if we take a brief look into the history of Oct 31st, we will find that the first ever outfits worn were truly Horror costumes.
Lets take a brief insight into the history of Halloween and how the first costumes came to be, it was the Celts who populated what is now known as the United Kingdom who first celebrated on the 31st Oct, the festival was known as Samhain, the 1st of November marked the start of their new year, a time when the harvest of the summer months was over and the long dark nights of winter were arriving.
the Celts being spiritual people believed the last night in October was when the living dead returned to cause trouble, this is closely related to the modern day term Zombie, many modern day horror costumes have been designed around this of which we see some great examples at Halloween, but the Celts version was actually made from an animals Hyde or skin complete with head.
Already we can see a likeness with today’s celebrations, in the year 800 Christianity spread across the lands and the religious leaders sanctioned the 1st of November to be All Saints Day, many historians now believe this to be a blatant move to smother the Celts Samhain festival, all saints day was also known as All-Hallows then as time passed the night before All-Hallows was named All Hallows Eve and finally Halloween.
As Irish citizens poured into America to escape the potato famine in the late 1800’s they brought with them folk tales of their spiritual festivals the living dead and witchcraft. European and American Indian beliefs began to mix and the first signs of the modern day Halloween started to emerge.
It is now in the Early 1900’s and the celebrations have turned into a community event with nearly all of the religious and spiritual ties cut and by 1950 the celebrations we see today were in full flow, street parties, costume parties, parades, trick or treat & jack o lanterns were the norm.
Bringing us up to Halloween 2009 when $7 billion is expected to be spent in the USA alone, there are many more Horror Costumes around today as movies have had a massive effect over the years such as Dracular, friday 13th and countless werewolf movies to name just a few and if you are anything like me a Horror Costume is a must have for October 31st.
