5. Christmas can be extremely expensive, and it can often take most of the year to save up and pay for it all. You might want to buy your children all the things they want but really can’t afford it.

6. As we all know, Christmas has lost it’s real meaning. The religious side of things hardly gets a mention, as all the shops and other people who are keen for your money are encouraging you to buy.

7. For some, the art of Christmas shopping has been lost. Fewer and fewer people are battling with the crowds and fighting for the last available wrapping paper and cards in the shops. More people are buying online, and shopping in comfort, knowing that if they order soon enough, they will receive their purchases in plenty of time. This is much better, but loses part of the fun of Christmas.

8. A lot of people think that Christmas is over rated, and that having to be civil to relatives you don’t like or see the rest of the year is a bit hypocritical. Still, at the very least, you will probably get a few days off work and lots of nice food.

9. The current recession means that people have to be much more careful with their money, and that cutbacks will have to be made in certain areas in order for the children to have a good Christmas. Maybe your summer holiday was postponed, or maybe you haven’t changed your car or carried out the DIY tasks that need doing as Christmas has to come first.

10. The office Christmas Party is always a good time, and no matter whether you enjoy Christmas or not, you’re sure to enjoy this year’s festive celebration. Whether you’ve had to cut back on your spending for the Christmas Party, or haven’t booked anywhere yet, it’s the one time of year when you can let your hair down and get the boss to pay for everything. Halloween and Christians?

No offense to any Christians with this question. I am a christian to, but i would like others opinions and thoughts on this.

My best friend is also a Christian, but when it comes to me I think she takes it a little to seriously and overboard. She sees Halloween as a day where people worship ghosts, the devil, monsters and witches. I see it as a day where kids dress up in cute costumes and go out with their parents to functions like carnivals or a party. We both work with kids and on Halloween I get pictures for the kids to color, and the pictures ranges from pumpkins to kids dressed up as super heros, ballerinas, clowns, cowboys and yes, the occasional witch and frankenstein monster. I of course don’t get grotesque looking monsters cause they are little kids. Is my friend taking her beliefs to far or am I just not seeing Halloween as she sees it?

The name “Halloween” is a bastardization of the middle English “Hallows Even” or the night before a hallowed day (Nov 1 – All Saints Day). Early Christian celebrations called for them to go a-souling, essentially trick-or-treating for alms and small cakes to celebrate the saints on the following day.

Lovers Lane Halloween Costumes Catalog

Sweeney Todd became known as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street and his story has been the subject of the original Penny Dreadful, books and more latterly, both a blockbuster movie and show stopping musical. Thought to have had over 150 victims, Sweeney Todd truly does qualify as a serial killer. So heinous were his deeds that they even gave rise to the term ‘cut throat razor’ an expression that still makes most of us shiver today.

Sweeney Todd was born in the East End of London on October 16, 1756 at number 85 Brick Lane. In those day’s London was still developing and spreading out and Brick Lane itself was in parts little more than a country lane that led out to Bethnal Green and the brickfields. Both his parents were associated with the silk trade which was centred in the area of Spitalfields.

Wrongly accused of theft at the age of fourteen, Todd was sentenced to a five year stretch in the notorious Newgate Prison. Whilst incarcerated behind the walls of Newgate, Todd was befriended by Elmer Plummer an old barber who was serving time for fraud. This friendship extended to Plummer teaching the young Sweeney how to cut hair and shave customers – and how to relieve them of their valuables by picking their pockets. By the time he left prison, Sweeney Todd had served his apprenticeship and on his release in 1775 he set up his own barber shop at 186 Fleet Street.

Todd’s first murder is considered to have been in the spring of 1785, when a newspaper report describes a murder of a countryman in Fleet Street where the assailant, once the victim’s throat had been slashed, ran off and disappeared into a typical London fog.

Within the infamous barber shop customers sat in a barber’s chair that was fixed to a revolving trapdoor. When activated, the chair revolved depositing the poor unsuspecting customer, at that point still alive, into the cellar. As one chair swung over, a matching empty chair would swing through to take its place. It is not believed that Sweeney Todd murdered in his shop, rather this was done in the cellar where the fallen body would be lying unconscious on the cellar floor.

Having left his shop immediately for the cellar, Sweeney Todd would unfurl his razor and slash the throat of his victim. He would use what we now refer to as a cut throat razor.

Initially disposal of the bodies was not a problem for Todd as he simply left the bodies in the burial crypt of St Dunstan’s Church hidden among the numerous family crypts. This was not to last as it was soon to become impracticable to hide any more bodies there.

The problem was solved by the creation of a removable wall between the crypt and the basement bakery of his pie maker lover Margery Lovett (although in some instances it is believed she was Sarah Lovett). With this established as the route for disposal, the sordid business of filling pies was begun.

The pair’s undoing was the smell of rotting flesh which drifted through the church. For months no one investigated, despite the fact that no one had been buried in the crypt for years, until the stench of rotting flesh grew too great and the Bow Street Runners were brought in to investigate. From this point it was not long before both Sweeney Todd and Margery Lovett were both arrested.

Margery Lovett almost immediately confessed all to the police and Sweeney Todd ended his life at the end of the hangman’s rope outside Newgate Prison early in January 1802. Lovett however was to cheat the hangman’s noose by poisoning herself in her cell.

Gruesome; absolutely. Fascinating; surely. Unbelievable; almost. What a story and what a fantastic Halloween costume party theme. This has got everything. Blood and gore, a love interest and scope for the most outrageous gore fest. (srry for the spelling) i know Halloween is in a long time, but i need to find a cute costume for my friends party. im 13, and most people wear these super tight trampy costumes, so i dont want it too baby-ish, but not too skanky. lol. i saw a cute pirate one but idk.

The Joy Of Face Painting

Face painting is one of the cherished activities of festivals, carnivals, parades and events across the country. More and more holidays are beginning to use face painting as a great activity for kids. Schools can also incorporate it as a station on their annual field day. Halloween may boast the most face painting out of any holiday, but summer fairs and county festivals run close behind. The designs are too innumerable to count. A face can be transformed in its entirety, into an animal, character or monster. Face painters often use stencils, which are painted and then stamped onto the face, and can be popular, too. Whatever designs the children, or even adult asks the face painter for, there are a hundred ways to go about getting a great design.

Stencils and stamps are probably the easiest way for beginners to successfully do face painting. The stencils themselves can be cleaned with alcohol or wet wipes between paintings for sanitary reasons. A brush is then used to apply a new color or set of colors for the next child. Different colors can be used for separate parts of the stamp. For example, a butterfly can be outlined in blue and filled in with yellow. The stamp is then pressed against the person’s cheek. This is a good way to get the lines just right each time.

Many people who do face painting will do everything with a paint brush. Whiskers, dog eyes, hearts, rainbows and Spider Man are all popular. For the 4th of July, a face could be painted completely with red, white and blue stars. For Easter, decorative eggs, bunny rabbits, flowers and baskets can all easily be painted onto the face. Try hearts for Valentine’s Day, or a candy cane face with alternating red and white stripes for a wild, Christmas gathering. People will surprise face painters with creative requests, however. Be prepared to paint just about any character, emblem or color imaginable.

Halloween certainly boasts the biggest number of face painted ghouls, vampires, monsters and more. For the Hulk, one can simply paint their faces green. You can also use a simple Halloween theme, as well. Try bats, a spider web face, or an eerie yellowish tint for a witch’s face. Zombies and ghouls can cast sunken features under their eyes and paint blood around their mouths. Of course, the characters don’t have to be scary. It’s not hard to paint a clown face, with a little patience for painting a giant mouth, or using a solid color to enhance a costume, such as a giant raisin, bear or anything else one can build or find a costume for. Many Halloween costumes will provide directions for adding face painting. There are also plenty of kits in stores or on the web, which are geared for specific characters, or that come with all the colors for one’s own creativity to come out. In general, these paints are a little thicker and harder to remove than the typical face paint used for your everyday festival or event.

which of these halloween ideas do you like best? (vote)?

Ok, so I have a dwarf rabbit and he likes to go everywhere with me. School football games, on walks (he has a leash) fred meyer, walmart.. you get the point.
anyways… this halloween I wanted to buy/make a costume that includes Bungee (my bunny)
so my two ideas so far are…
be a rabbit (ears and such) and he could be my rabbit
or be a butterfly with wings that move, and he could be wrapped in a towel and it could be his “cucoon”
If i was to do the butterfly idea, how could i make sure people knew what my bunny was supposed to be?
