Halloween originated in the United Kingdom, though it is celebrated mostly by countries of the Western World.  These countries include the United States, Canada, Ireland Puerto Rico, Japan, New Zealand, and parts of Australia.  These western countries embraced the celebration of the holiday in the late twentieth century.

Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival, known as Samhain.  Samhain is a festival celebration of the end of the harvest season, the the Gaelic culture, also known as the Celtic New Year.  This was a time used by the ancient pegans to take stock of their supplies, and to slaughter livestock for winter stores.  They believed that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the dead and alive dissolve, and that the dead become dangerous, causing sickness or damaged crops for the living.  The festivals included bonfires, into which the bones of the slaughtered livestock was thrown.  Masks and costumes was worn in an attempt ot mimic the evil spirits and the dead, or placate them.

The name Halloween is derived and shortened from All Hallows’ Evening.  It is the eve of All Hallows’ Day, also known as All Saints’ Day.  Until Popes Gregory III and Gregory IV moved the old Christian feast of All Saints’ Day from May 13, it was a day of religious festivities in various Northern European Pagan traditions.  At that time, the two holidays were celebrated on the same day, although All Saints’ Day is now considered to occur one day after Halloween.

A candle lit inside a carved pumpkin is one of Halloween’s most prominent symbols, commonly called a Jack-o’-lantern.  This originated in Europe and was carved from a turnip or rutabaga.  The head being the most powerful part of the body, contains the spirit and knowledge, this head was used to frighten off any superstitions.  Carving of pumpkins, associated mostly with Halloween in North America.  Pumpkins were readily available, and much larger, thus making them easier to carve.  Pumpkins are carved into frightening and comical faces, and placed with a candle inside on the doorstep of homes after dark.  In America, the carving of pumpkins preceded the Great Famine period of Irish immigration.  Associated with harvest time in general, America did not become specifically associated with Halloween until the middle to late nineteenth century.

Halloween imagery involves death, mythical creatures, magic, ghosts, ghauls, witches, vultures, owls, crows, pumpkin men, black cats, spiders, goblins, sombies, mummies, skeletons, demons etc.  Therefor home are often decorated with these types of symbols around the Halloween season.  Halloween costumes are also based on themes other than the traditional horror, but mostly those of monsters, witches, devils ghosts and skeletons.  A common sight also during Halloween is that of Trick-or-Treat.  It started as a local event in Philadelphia in 1950, and expanded nationally in 1952.  Children dressed up in costumes go from house to house in their neighborhood, where mostly they are given donations in the way of candy or treats, in some cases small change as well.

Halloween is a Holiday associated with children and adults alike dressing up and going to parties, parades or trick and treat, pumpkin carving and having fun, nowadays the list of different costumes available is almost endless but if we take a brief look into the history of Oct 31st, we will find that the first ever outfits worn were truly Horror costumes.

Lets take a brief insight into the history of Halloween and how the first costumes came to be, it was the Celts who populated what is now known as the United Kingdom who first celebrated on the 31st Oct, the festival was known as Samhain, the 1st of November marked the start of their new year, a time when the harvest of the summer months was over and the long dark nights of winter were arriving.

the Celts being spiritual people believed the last night in October was when the living dead returned to cause trouble, this is closely related to the modern day term Zombie, many modern day horror costumes have been designed around this of which we see some great examples at Halloween, but the Celts version was  actually made from an animals Hyde or skin complete with head.

Already we can see a likeness with today’s celebrations, in the year 800 Christianity spread across the lands and the religious leaders sanctioned the 1st of November to be All Saints Day, many historians now believe this to be a blatant move to smother the Celts Samhain festival, all saints day was also known as All-Hallows then as time passed the night before All-Hallows was named All Hallows Eve and finally Halloween.

As Irish citizens poured into America to escape the potato famine in the late 1800′s they brought with them folk tales of their spiritual festivals the living dead and witchcraft. European and American Indian beliefs began to mix and the first signs of the modern day Halloween started to emerge.

It is now in the Early 1900′s and the celebrations have turned into a community event with nearly all of the religious and spiritual ties cut and by 1950 the celebrations we  see today were in full flow, street parties, costume parties, parades, trick or treat & jack o lanterns were the norm.

Bringing us up to Halloween 2009 when $7 billion is expected to be spent in the USA alone, there are many more Horror Costumes around today as movies have had a massive effect over the years such as Dracular, friday 13th and countless werewolf movies to name just a few and if you are anything like me a Horror Costume is a must have for October 31st.
