Maybe it's because it is in black and white and the picture quality is poor and grainy by modern standards. Or maybe because it is a silent movie. These elements deprive the viewer of some of his/her primary senses so he/she feels vulnerable. I saw a mockumentary of the making of the movie and it claimed that the Nosferatu character was a real person that they used to visit and bribe with human blood so that he would make the movie.
